If Maggie can forgive herself, it still might come true.Book An Invincible Summer (Wyndham Beach Book 1) Review :
The book started out great for me - 40 year class reunion, going back to hometown and 2 bffs. The " big secret" was pretty obvious very early on, but the other characters' stories kept my interest going. I was really enjoying myself until the last few chapters and then (in my opinion) it turned into a soap opera. The ending, or lack thereof, was very disappointing. You have no option except to buy the next book if you want to know about what happened to any of the characters. The worst offense is that the author had to insert that one of the characters lost parents and a spouse to the pandemic. However, throughout the book with all of the parties, dinners, get togethers, concerts, etc., there was not a single word about masks, distancing, vaccines, or anything. I think she should go back and have those 3 people killed by a drunk driver, a plane crash or something other than the pandemic. I, for one, was looking for an escape and that reference took that away. I chose this book for my April "First Reads" selection. I figured I could relate to the characters who are joining together for their 40th High School Reunion and my own 40th class reunion was just a couple of years ago.THE GOOD:*Most of the character are likeable without being sugary sweet. I could see similarities to friends of mine. I did indeed feel that many of the events shared their history were much like some of my own memories.*No explicitly detailed physical encounters. THANK YOU!*The author refrained from using the F-word, which is in keeping with the age of these ladies. I know that the young adults today use it casually and it is getting difficult to find books that do not have it sprinkled liberally (or spread thickly) throughout. Again, thank you.THE BAD:*Almost every chapter had "mild" curse words, many chapters had multiple. I flagged more than 50 times in the 22 chapters. It just wasn't necessary or in keeping with how the author portrayed the ladies. If that is something that bothers you, you might want to think twice before acquiring this book.*The thinly veiled "mystery" event was really so obvious that the author should have just gone ahead and told the story earlier. There was however a problem with the timeline unless their prom was in February. Around here, prom is a late spring event and always has been.*The title doesn't really apply since the story actually spans a full year, more or less.* Another reviewer mentioned this, but I found it troubling enough that it bears repeating-- When a character reveals that he lost multiple members of his family to the recent pandemic, I immediately questioned why the author chose to cite the pandemic as the means of death. Since the characters in this book had ALL attended multiple functions and get-togethers without a single mention of social distancing, masks, testing, or any other aspect of life pertinent to life during a pandemic, this came out of nowhere.Overall, it is not a bad book. It also is not an outstanding book. I am one who is not looking forward to the next one because I will most likely skip it. This is mainlydue to language. My friends and I do not speak this crudely and, in my opinion, it just didn't serve these characters very well.
